Unpacking the results of Brazil’s heated presidential election

Brazilians are still reflecting on the results of Sunday’s Presidential election, where incumbent Jair Bolsonaro defied opinion polls in the first round.
Left-wing Luiz Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva came out on top with 48 percent of the votes, but the far-right Bolsonaro outperformed pollsters’ predictions to take 43 percent of the tally.
He will now face a runoff later this month against Lula da Silva.
